Elon Musk’s floating Cybertruck tweet torpedoed by government agencies

Shoot away!

Elon Musk tweeted Thursday that the next Cybertruck will have the ability to float, adding to its usefulness.

“Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes, and even seas that aren’t too rough,” Musk wrote.

Musk has previously made statements about the stainless steel Cybertruck as well as the Model S sedan.

“We *def* don’t recommend it, but the Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods. Thrust via wheel spin,” he tweeted of the Model S in 2016.

The latest tweet has sparked some skepticism on social media, with some pointing out that many cars, including the Volkswagen Beetle, can float for short periods but eventually sink.

A notable response came from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, which torpedoed Musk’s tweet with one of its own that included a photo of a submerged car and said, “Our derelict ship crews beg to understand that anything that “briefly served as a boat” should not be used as a boat.”

San Francisco Bay Ferry operators sent an even more aggressive shot at Musk’s bow after someone suggested the Cybertruck would bankrupt him.

“Announcement: To prepare for the inevitability of the Nintendo 64 Floating Truck Flotilla rendering us obsolete, we are adding small wheels to our ferries. Landboat will be able to serve briefly as a bus, so it can cross bridges, parking lots and freeways that aren’t too congested,” the agency tweeted, referring to the vehicle’s design that has been compared to old video game graphics.

“Hurry up, come ride before the Blade Runner Barge Armada takes us out of service. Free rides next Wednesday!” he added, promoting California Clean Air Day scheduled for October 5.

Tesla is hosting its AI Day event on Friday evening, when more details about the Cybertruck might be revealed.
